I adore Ayn Rand, her ideologies and her novels. This is the best. The stage set up for this novel (Russia), how the conditions were and what people had to go through are explained in the best way possible. Kira is a very strong character who holds on to her beliefs and never gives in. I liked Leo in the initial part of the novel but seeing him losing himself by the end of the story, I didn’t approve of him. On the other hand, Andrei is very remarkable. I could not stand it to read about his suicide. Irina and Sasha were the two other prominent characters for me in the novel. I noticed that Ayn Rand has very strong opinions, she is kind of rebellious and she shoves the truth into the reader’s face hard and fast. What amazes me is her thoughts about love. I literally cried reading the departure of Irina and Sasha to the Siberian prison. It broke my heart. Last but not least, one person fighting against a whole country and not giving in until the last breath is very heroic and the hero of We the Living, Kira lives in my heart forever. I personally have a wonderful imagination (I’m not bragging about it) but when I read the lines written by AR, I see myself watching the whole scene with my very own eyes. That is the best I can put into words about how much I love her narration. Ayn Rand is a true legend! Her characters are very distinct, not like any regular hero, heroine.. even the villain is so remarkable, that you will fall in love with him.

I must say, this is the best play I read in my life. Bjorn Faulkner, Karen Andre and Lawrence Regan took my breath away. It is a play that takes place in a courtroom. It is not a huge story with too many incidents but a small one that leaves the whole scenario to the reader’s imagination. I’m impressed with Faulkner and Regan. Ayn Rand as always knows exactly what kind of men are needed in today’s world. They both were fearless, they get what they want, they rule the world and when it comes to love, they give everything. Karen’s love and devotion for Faulkner are beyond words. Regan is a gangster by profession but also knows how to respect love when he sees it. I’m always amazed at the kind of main male characters that Ayn Rand designs in her books. I wonder if such men do really exist in today’s world. Men who fear nothing, who have sky-high goals, who work for what they want, who refuse to bow to anyone, who crush the rules set by the so-called society and men who love beyond any kind of scale that is ever built in this world. Hats-off to Ayn Rand! She is the hero.

I became a huge fan of Ayn Rand when I read The Fountain Head at the age of 20. Now after reading Atlas Shrugged, I am amazed. The way Ayn gave the details of the state of the industry, politics and people during that time left me speechless. I am totally in love with Dagny.. what a woman? The three other key characters Francisco, Hank and John Galt are wonderful men. The way they stood for what they believed in, made me believe in myself. I could not put the book down till the last page. I wanted to read it as fast as I could to know what my favorite character is upto and didn’t want the book to end, at the same time. This is a must read for every human being. The book has love, romance, courage, hatred, challenge, integrity, loathing, anger and hope
It is a great privilege to love, respect, live and work on one’s own terms. I wonder what Ayn Rand would’ve said if she had seen today’s world.
Hank’s character is the closest to my heart. Hank always wondered about his family members who professed to love him for some unknown reason but ignored all the things for which he could wish to be loved. There are plenty of young men and women who experience the conditional so-called love from family members and partners that chokes them leading to developing not even hatred but indifference.
It always is special to find a mind that we respect, an adversary worth matching.. just like Dagny found it in Hank. I totally agree with Dagny who dispises praise and adulation from men whom she doesn’t respect. I can feel what its like to feel the longing for someone you admire, for something, not to look down at, but up to.
By the time I reached the last page, I understood “No one’s happiness but my own is in my power to achieve or to destroy”.
